The airport facility opened on July 26, 1935, in Woolsington by Secretary of State for Air, Sir Phillip Cunliffe-Lister, cost £35,000 to build and consisted of a grass runway, clubhouse, hangar, workshops and a garage.

It is situated immediately outside the terminal providing convenient and hassle free picking up and dropping off facilities to the passengers. No ticket facility is available and the payment is made through Tyne Tunnel Style payment hoppers and by credit card. The charges are at £ 1 for up to 20 minutes, £ 2 for 20-30 minutes, £4 for 30-45 minutes, £ 6 for 45-60 minutes and thereafter.
