75 Glorious Years: Newcastle Airport
From its humble beginnings as a grass strip with a few huts back in 1935, Newcastle Airport has grown to become the region’s biggest airport celebrating its 75th birthday on July 26 this year.
This year has seen the most severe winter in the last 40 years and the volcanic ash cloud grounding flights across Europe, yet the airport has just kept the region moving on.
The airport connects people to jobs, family, holidays, honeymoons and global events such as the World Cup. It also connects businesses to markets, customers, head offices and conferences.
As a major contributor to the region’s economy the airport provides 3000 jobs onsite, 5000 more in the surrounds of the North-east and pumps £400m into the regional economy annually.
The airport facility opened on July 26, 1935, in Woolsington by Secretary of State for Air, Sir Phillip Cunliffe-Lister, cost £35,000 to build and consisted of a grass runway, clubhouse, hangar, workshops and a garage.
Today Newcastle International is a brand and the fastest-growing regional airport in the UK, connected to over 86 destinations, and with Emirates Airline, flying daily direct from Newcastle to Dubai, 50 more onward destinations worldwide. It boasts a state-of-the-art £8m air traffic control tower, the creation of a luxury £20m business park.faro car hire
